| 10 Days / 9 Nights | Kathmandu - Karnali River, Western Nepal - Kathmandu
Ten days on the Karnali River is Nepal's longest, wildest and most complete whitewater journey. Starting from the put-in at Tallo Dhungeshwor and finishing at Chisapani on the edge of Bardiya National Park, this expedition carries you through remote Himalayan foothill country that very few travelers ever see — deep river gorges, sandy beach campsites, jungle-lined banks and villages that still live by the rhythm of the river rather than the road. Royal Nepal Holidays runs this trip as a full Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu expedition with professional river guides, a dedicated safety kayaker, an experienced camp crew and ten days of genuine wilderness rafting on Class III to V whitewater.
This is not a short taster of rafting. It is a proper river expedition — the kind that rewards travelers who want depth, remoteness and a real sense of accomplishment over a quick adrenaline hit close to Kathmandu.

Most travelers come to the Karnali because they have already done a river in Nepal — a day trip on the Trishuli, perhaps, or a short run on the Bhote Koshi — and they want something that actually tests them. The Karnali delivers that. It is Nepal's longest river, running from the Tibetan plateau through some of the country's most remote western hill country before joining the Terai plains. Because so little of its route is accessible by road, a rafting expedition is still one of the only ways to properly experience this part of Nepal.
Over 10 days you will paddle through narrow gorges and wide open valleys, camp on isolated sandy beaches under genuinely dark skies, pass through stretches of jungle where wildlife sightings are common, and finish near Bardiya National Park — one of Nepal's best and least-visited wildlife reserves. The trip combines serious whitewater with slow river days, cultural contact with Tharu and Magar communities along the banks, and camping that feels closer to an old-fashioned expedition than a packaged tour.
Ten days is the right length for the Karnali. It allows for a realistic pace, rest days built around river conditions, and enough time to properly acclimatize to expedition rafting rather than rushing a big volume river in a way that compromises safety.
Complete Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu service. We handle every logistic — domestic transport, river permits, camping equipment, meals and the return journey — so you only need to show up ready to paddle.
Professional river guides. Our lead guides carry years of Karnali-specific experience, formal swiftwater rescue training and a track record of running this exact 10-day route safely across multiple seasons.
Dedicated safety kayaker. A safety kayaker accompanies every expedition through significant rapids, positioned to assist swimmers and support the raft crew independently of the main raft.
Quality camping equipment. Four-season tents, proper sleeping mats, a dedicated kitchen tent and reliable camp gear — not the bare minimum some budget operators supply for a 10-day trip.
Freshly prepared expedition meals. Our cook and kitchen crew prepare hot meals daily from fresh and dried supplies carried in, with attention to vegetarian and other dietary needs.
Private departures available. Beyond our fixed group dates, we can run this trip privately for your group on dates that suit you.
Emergency and evacuation planning. We carry a comprehensive first-aid kit, satellite communication for the remote sections of the route, and a clear evacuation plan agreed with local contacts before departure.
Local Nepal travel expertise. As a Kathmandu-based company with guides drawn from the regions we operate in, we combine river skill with genuine on-the-ground knowledge of Western Nepal.
This expedition combines several experiences in one journey:
The route and river difficulty can change with seasonal water levels, so the rafting leader has the final authority over daily river sections and safety decisions.
The Karnali is a challenging expedition river, and conditions vary significantly with season and water level. Participants should follow all instructions from the professional rafting crew.
Before each major rapid, the guide will explain the required paddling technique and safety procedure. Participants are provided with appropriate rafting safety equipment, including life jackets and helmets.
The exact rapids navigated, campsite locations and daily rafting distance may change according to weather, river flow, safety considerations and local conditions.
A normal rafting day generally follows this pattern:
06:30–07:00: Wake up
07:00–08:00: Breakfast
08:00–09:00: Pack personal equipment and camp
09:00: Begin rafting
12:00–13:00: Riverside lunch
13:00–16:00: Continue rafting
16:00–17:00: Arrive at campsite
17:00 onward: Relax, explore and photograph the surroundings
19:00: Dinner
20:00 onward: Relax around camp / stargazing
The exact schedule changes according to the river section and weather.
The Karnali River is a remote wilderness environment. Travelers should be prepared for limited road access, limited mobile connectivity, basic camping conditions and changes to the itinerary caused by river conditions or weather.
This is an adventure expedition rather than a conventional sightseeing tour. The reward is the opportunity to experience one of Nepal's most remote and spectacular river environments with a professional rafting team.
Kathmandu → Nepalgunj or Surkhet (flight or road) → Tallo Dhungeshwor (put-in) → Karnali Gorge → Seti–Karnali Confluence → Bheri–Karnali Confluence → Chisapani (take-out) → Nepalgunj → Kathmandu
The route runs almost entirely through country with no road access, which is exactly what preserves the wilderness character of the trip. Once you put in at Tallo Dhungeshwor, the river becomes the only route forward until Chisapani nine days later.
Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Depending on arrival time
Activity: Arrival, transfer and expedition briefing
Your Karnali River adventure begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
A representative from Royal Nepal Holidays will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, you have time to relax after your international journey.
If your arrival time permits, you can explore the nearby streets of Thamel or visit some of Kathmandu's cultural attractions.
In the evening, your rafting team will conduct an expedition briefing. Your guide will explain the rafting route, expected river conditions, safety procedures, equipment, camping arrangements and daily routine.
You can also use this time to check your personal rafting equipment and purchase any last-minute items.
Overnight: Kathmandu hotel
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Activity: Flight/road transfer and expedition preparation
After breakfast, begin your journey toward Western Nepal.
Depending on the operating schedule and package arrangement, travel toward Surkhet by domestic flight or other arranged transportation. The journey takes you away from the busy Kathmandu Valley toward the remote landscapes of Karnali Province.
From Surkhet, continue by road toward Tallo Dhungeshwor, the traditional starting area for the Karnali rafting expedition.
The road journey provides an opportunity to observe rural Western Nepal, forested hills, villages and changing landscapes.
After reaching the rafting area, the crew prepares the rafts, camping equipment and kitchen equipment. You receive a detailed safety and paddling briefing before the expedition begins.
The first night is spent beside the river. Enjoy your first wilderness dinner and experience sleeping in a riverside camp beneath the open sky.
Overnight: Riverside tented camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
Today is the official beginning of your Karnali River rafting adventure.
After breakfast, the rafting guides conduct a final equipment and safety check. Everyone receives a life jacket, helmet and paddle, followed by instructions on paddling commands, body positioning and emergency procedures.
The raft then enters the Karnali River.
The first section allows the team to become familiar with the river and work together as a paddling crew. As the journey continues, the river becomes increasingly exciting, with waves, technical sections and spectacular wilderness scenery.
One of the memorable features of the upper Karnali section is the First Inquiry rapid and other challenging whitewater sections.
After several hours on the river, stop for lunch on or beside a sandy riverbank.
The afternoon continues with more rafting through remote valleys and forested landscapes before reaching the Scorpion Beach area.
Set up camp on the riverbank, enjoy dinner prepared by the expedition cook and relax beside the Karnali River.
Overnight: Scorpion Beach riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
Wake up to the sound of the Karnali River and enjoy breakfast at camp.
Today brings another exciting day of whitewater rafting. After packing the camping equipment, the crew loads the rafts and begins paddling downstream.
The river passes through dramatic wilderness landscapes with forested hills, rocky cliffs, sandy beaches and remote valleys.
Several rapids require coordinated paddling between the guide and the rafting team. Your guides will give commands before each significant rapid and help the group navigate the safest available line according to the river conditions.
Stop along the river for lunch before continuing downstream.
The afternoon section provides more opportunities for exciting whitewater as well as calmer stretches where you can enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Arrive at the Cotton Pani area, sometimes referred to in rafting itineraries as Sweet Nation Light/Cotton Pani.
After reaching camp, enjoy some free time to relax, photograph the scenery and explore the riverbank.
Dinner is prepared by the expedition kitchen team.
Overnight: Cotton Pani riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
Today is one of the most exciting days of the expedition.
After breakfast, continue downstream through increasingly dramatic sections of the Karnali River.
The river passes through remote gorges and rugged landscapes where access from the road is limited. This isolation is one of the reasons Karnali is considered one of Nepal's classic wilderness rafting destinations.
The crew encounters a combination of powerful waves, rapids and calmer pools.
Your guide will assess each major rapid based on current water levels and provide specific instructions before the raft enters the whitewater.
After a riverside lunch, continue toward God House, one of the well-known sections of the Karnali rafting route.
The evening is spent at a remote riverside campsite.
Enjoy dinner, relax around the campsite and take advantage of the clear night sky for photography and stargazing when weather conditions permit.
Overnight: God House riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
After breakfast, the expedition continues through the wild Karnali River corridor.
The morning can include some of the more challenging whitewater of the expedition. The exact difficulty and route depend on seasonal river levels, weather and the assessment of the rafting team.
As you travel farther downstream, the landscape gradually changes. Narrow river sections give way to broader valleys and more open riverbanks.
After lunch, continue toward Benighat, near the confluence of the Seti Karnali and Karnali Rivers.
This is an important geographical point on the expedition and a beautiful place to stop and appreciate the scale of the river system.
After reaching the campsite, the crew sets up tents while the kitchen team prepares dinner.
Spend the evening beside the river and enjoy the peaceful wilderness environment.
Overnight: Benighat riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
Continue the expedition downstream after breakfast.
The river begins to open up in sections, although there are still rapids and technical stretches along the route.
Today's journey takes you through spectacular canyon scenery, forested hills and remote river valleys.
The changing landscape provides excellent opportunities for photography. Keep your camera ready during calmer sections of the river, where you can observe birds, vegetation and traditional settlements along the river corridor.
After a riverside lunch, continue toward Tamcha, also associated with the Red Rock Mountain area on some rafting itineraries.
On arrival, the crew establishes camp.
This is a good evening to relax after several consecutive days of rafting. Enjoy dinner and spend time with fellow travelers and the rafting crew.
Overnight: Tamcha riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Shorter rafting section / rest afternoon
Today provides a welcome change from the longer rafting days.
After breakfast, pack the camp and begin a shorter section of rafting toward Jamune.
The river continues through remote wilderness, but there are opportunities to enjoy calmer stretches of water.
After reaching the campsite around Jamune, have lunch and enjoy a relaxed afternoon.
Depending on river conditions and the expedition schedule, you may:
The rest period is particularly valuable because the previous days have involved several hours of paddling each day.
Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner at camp and prepare for the final major rafting section.
Overnight: Jamune riverside camp
Accommodation: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Rafting: Full day
After breakfast, begin one of the final full rafting days of the expedition.
The river gradually becomes wider as you move toward the lower Karnali region. Continue through a mixture of rapids, waves, calm pools and broad river sections.
The landscape also begins to transition from the narrow mountain environment toward the warmer lowland region of Western Nepal.
Stop for lunch along the river before continuing downstream.
The destination for the day is the area around Ghatgaun, near the Bheri and Karnali River confluence.
The Bheri is one of the major tributaries contributing to the Karnali river system, making this an impressive geographical point along the expedition.
After reaching camp, enjoy the final wilderness evening beside the river.
Celebrate the successful completion of most of the rafting expedition with your guides and crew.
Overnight: Ghatgaun riverside camp
Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu, if required by departure schedule
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Rafting: Final morning rafting
Wake early and enjoy breakfast beside the Karnali River.
Today is the final rafting section of your 10-day Karnali River Rafting Expedition.
After packing the camp, enter the river for the final stretch toward Chisapani, the traditional take-out area.
The final rafting section provides a chance to enjoy the river without rushing. Take photographs, appreciate the surrounding landscape and celebrate the completion of your expedition.
After reaching Chisapani, the rafting crew takes the rafts out of the water.
Enjoy lunch before saying goodbye to the river crew.
From Chisapani, continue by road toward Nepalgunj Airport. The drive passes through the lowland landscapes of Western Nepal and provides an opportunity to appreciate how dramatically the scenery has changed since the beginning of the expedition.
Depending on the flight schedule, fly from Nepalgunj back to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel or continue with your onward international departure according to your flight schedule.
Your Karnali River Rafting 10 Days adventure with Royal Nepal Holidays officially concludes.

Compared to Nepal's shorter, more accessible rivers, the Karnali stands apart on remoteness, scale and commitment. The Trishuli and Seti are easy road-access rivers suited to short trips and first-timers. The Bhote Koshi is short, steep and intensely technical. The Bheri offers a genuine multi-day wilderness feel on a smaller scale. The Karnali combines the biggest volume, the longest true wilderness section, the most sustained whitewater and the deepest sense of expedition of any commercially rafted river in Nepal. It is not simply "a bigger river" — it is a different category of trip, closer to a genuine river expedition than a rafting excursion.
| River | Duration | Difficulty | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trishuli | 1–3 days | Easy–moderate | First-time rafters |
| Seti | 2 days | Moderate | Short adventure |
| Bhote Koshi | 1–2 days | Challenging | Adrenaline seekers |
| Bheri | Multi-day | Moderate | Wilderness taste |
| Karnali | 10 days | Challenging | Expedition travelers |
Class III rapids are powerful, with strong waves and some technical maneuvering required, but generally manageable for a well-briefed crew following guide instructions.
Class IV rapids are more technical, requiring precise, coordinated paddling and a guide who reads the line correctly under pressure.
Class V rapids are the most demanding sections on the trip, requiring the right water conditions, an experienced crew and participants who are fit and following safety instruction closely. Not every departure will encounter Class V water — this depends heavily on the season and the river's flow at the time.
Notable named sections along the route — including areas known locally as Scorpion Beach, Cotton Pani and God House — combine strong rapids with gorge scenery. Actual grading can shift with water level, so your guide will confirm current classifications and adjust the plan for the day's conditions. We do not exaggerate the river's difficulty for marketing purposes; the Karnali is genuinely challenging without needing embellishment.
Safety on a 10-day expedition through remote country depends on preparation, equipment and guide judgment, not luck. Every Royal Nepal Holidays Karnali departure includes:
No river trip is risk-free, and the Karnali should be approached with respect rather than bravado. Our approach is to brief honestly, prepare thoroughly and let the guide's judgment on the river take priority over the itinerary.
Suitable for:
Not ideal for:
We would rather turn away a poor fit for this trip than put an unprepared traveler into a genuinely demanding river environment.
| Month | River Level | Weather | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | Moderate | Warm | Good |
| April | Good | Pleasant | Excellent |
| May | Good–high | Warm | Excellent |
| June | Variable | Hot, monsoon approaching | Good, check conditions |
| July | High | Monsoon | Not recommended |
| August | High | Monsoon | Not recommended |
| September | Variable | Improving late month | Fair |
| October | Excellent | Clear | Excellent |

| January | Low, cold | Cold | Limited |
| February | Rising | Cool | Case by case |
Spring (March to early June) and autumn (late September to November) are the strongest windows. Spring brings warmer water and reliable flow from snowmelt; autumn brings the clearest weather and settled river levels straight after the monsoon. Monsoon months (roughly July and August) are avoided due to dangerously high water and flood risk. Actual departure dates are always confirmed against real-time river flow, weather forecasts and our own safety assessment rather than the calendar alone.
USD 1,900 per person, based on a group of 4 travelers.
This price includes the complete Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu package described below. For groups of a different size, private departures, or custom dates, please contact us directly for a tailored quote — group size has a meaningful effect on per-person cost for a logistically complex 10-day expedition like this one.
Cost Includes
Cost Excludes
Essential rafting gear
Camping
Electronics (optional)
A detailed, expedition-specific checklist is provided at your pre-trip briefing in Kathmandu, and our team can advise on rental options for larger camping items.
Breakfast: eggs, bread, porridge or pancakes, with tea or coffee.
Lunch: dal bhat, pasta, rice, noodles, fresh vegetables and simple sandwiches, prepared riverside by the camp crew.
Dinner: Nepali-style meals, pasta or rice dishes, seasonal vegetables and hot soup to close out the day.
Our cook accommodates vegetarian diets as standard and can work with other dietary requirements flagged in advance. Drinking water is filtered and treated daily, and tea or coffee is available at camp throughout the trip. Food hygiene on the river follows the same standards we apply to our trekking expeditions.
In Kathmandu, you stay in a comfortable hotel before and after the expedition. On the river, accommodation is proper expedition tented camping: sturdy tents on sandy beach campsites, sleeping mats, a dedicated dining tent and a functioning kitchen setup run by the camp crew. Toilet arrangements are basic but properly managed at each camp. Showers are typically the river itself, supplemented by camp basins where practical. Mobile network coverage is limited to non-existent through much of the route, and charging opportunities for electronics are minimal — pack accordingly and treat the days on the river as genuinely disconnected.
The lower and middle stretches of the Karnali pass through genuinely wild country, and wildlife sightings are a real part of the experience, though never guaranteed. Travelers commonly see a range of birdlife along the banks, and there is a possibility of spotting river otters and gharial in quieter stretches, with occasional reports of Gangetic dolphin further downstream. As you near Chisapani, you are on the doorstep of Bardiya National Park, home to tigers, elephants and one of Nepal's best wild tiger populations. Riverside Tharu villages also offer a genuine, low-key cultural encounter distinct from anything you would see in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Because the expedition ends at Chisapani, right at the edge of Bardiya National Park, extending your trip is a natural next step rather than a detour. A 2 to 3 day Bardiya extension can include jungle safari activity, jeep safari, birdwatching, a Tharu cultural program and nature walks in one of Nepal's most rewarding and least-crowded wildlife reserves. If you are interested, let us know when booking and we will build this into your itinerary and quote as a combined package.
Our Karnali expeditions are led by senior guides from Royal Nepal Holidays, including Bashu, Chandra and Uttam, each with years of river and mountain guiding experience across Nepal and formal training in swiftwater rescue and first aid. The company is owned and run by Sushil Tiwari from our office in Thamel, Kathmandu, and every Karnali departure is planned in direct coordination with him and our river operations team to confirm current water levels, weather and route conditions before your group sets off.
We run the Karnali with a leave-no-trace approach to camping: all waste is carried out, campsites are left as we found them, and interactions with riverside communities are kept respectful and low-impact. Our crew is drawn substantially from the regions we operate in, and we favor local suppliers for food and logistics wherever practical.
Excellent
It is a genuinely challenging expedition with Class III to V rapids depending on the section and water level, combined with nine nights of remote camping. It is best suited to travelers with some rafting experience or a strong general fitness level.
Every departure includes a trained lead guide, a dedicated safety kayaker, full safety equipment, a stocked first-aid kit and a pre-arranged evacuation plan. No river trip is entirely without risk, but the expedition is run with safety as the priority over the schedule.
It is not strictly mandatory, but prior rafting experience is an advantage. Fit, adventurous first-timers can sometimes join depending on conditions and group composition — this is assessed individually by our team before booking.
March to early June and late September to November offer the most reliable water levels and weather. July and August are avoided due to monsoon flooding.
The 10-day expedition is USD 1,900 per person for a group of 4. Pricing for other group sizes or private departures is available on request.

More Than Rafting — An Incredible Team Experience
The Karnali River Expedition Taught Me That Rafting Is Not Only About The Rapids—it Is About Teamwork, Friendship, And Sharing An Experience With People From Different Backgrounds.
Every Day We Paddled Together, Encouraged One Another Through Difficult Sections, And Returned To Camp Tired But Happy. Evenings Beside The River Were Just As Memorable As The Rafting Itself. We Shared Meals, Stories, Laughter, And Watched The Stars Far Away From The Noise Of The Cities.
