Bhutan's classic 5 Days Bhutan Tour takes you through the kingdom's three most iconic valleys — Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha — in a private, guided itinerary designed for first-time visitors, couples, families, and small groups who want a complete introduction to Bhutan without a rushed pace. This Bhutan tour package combines cultural sightseeing in the capital, a scenic crossing of Dochula Pass, the fortress-monastery of Punakha Dzong, and a hike to the country's most famous landmark, Tiger's Nest Monastery, into one well-paced five-day itinerary.
Five days is enough time to see the heart of western Bhutan comfortably, without the long driving days that come with trying to add eastern or central Bhutan into a short trip. This itinerary is private and fully customizable, and it is designed by Royal Nepal Holidays specifically for travelers connecting through Kathmandu, whether they are starting their journey in Nepal or combining Bhutan with a Nepal Himalaya trip. Along the way, you'll be accompanied by a professional local Bhutanese guide and a private vehicle, staying in hotels ranging from comfortable 3-star properties to 4-star and luxury 5-star options depending on your budget and travel style.
Below you'll find the full day-by-day itinerary, an honest look at trip cost and what determines the price, Tiger's Nest hiking details, the current Bhutan visa and Sustainable Development Fee structure, and answers to the most common questions travelers ask before booking a 5 Days Bhutan Tour.

This 5 Days Bhutan Tour Package is built around the Paro – Thimphu – Punakha route, which is the most complete and well-tested short itinerary in Bhutan. It balances three priorities that many shorter Bhutan itineraries cannot: enough time to properly explore Thimphu's cultural sites, a full day dedicated to Punakha and Dochula Pass rather than a rushed drive-through, and a dedicated day for the Tiger's Nest hike so it doesn't compete with a travel day. The result is a Bhutan itinerary that feels complete rather than compressed.
As a private Bhutan tour, this itinerary runs on your schedule. You travel with your own vehicle, driver, and guide rather than joining a fixed group, which means start times, pace, meal choices, and stops along the way can all be adjusted. The itinerary below is our recommended structure, and it can be shortened, extended, or rearranged to suit your dates and interests.
| Day | Route | Main Activities | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Paro → Thimphu | Paro arrival, Buddha Dordenma, Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong | Thimphu |
| Day 2 | Thimphu → Dochula → Punakha | Dochula Pass, 108 Chortens, Punakha Dzong, Suspension Bridge, optional Chimi Lhakhang | Punakha |
| Day 3 | Punakha → Thimphu → Paro | Punakha sightseeing, scenic drive, Thimphu stop, Paro Valley & Paro Dzong | Paro |
| Day 4 | Paro → Tiger's Nest → Paro | Tiger's Nest hike, Taktsang Monastery, Kyichu Lhakhang, Paro sightseeing | Paro |
| Day 5 | Paro → Airport | Breakfast, free time depending on flight, airport transfer | — |

The route for this itinerary is: Paro → Thimphu → Punakha → Thimphu/Paro → Paro. This western Bhutan loop covers all three of the country's most-visited valleys in a single, manageable circuit without excessive backtracking, making it the most efficient route for a short Bhutan trip.
| Route | Approx. Driving Time | Main Highlight |

No 5 Days Bhutan Tour is complete without the hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang Palphug), and it deserves its own detailed planning section.
| Information | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Paro Valley |
| Monastery | Taktsang / Tiger's Nest |
| Approx. Elevation | Around 3,100 m |
| Starting Point | Tiger's Nest trailhead |
| Difficulty | Moderate |
| Duration | Several hours round trip |
| Terrain | Forest trail, stone steps and uneven sections |
| Recommended Gear | Hiking shoes, water, daypack |
| Best Approach | Start early |
| Suitable For | Travelers with reasonable fitness |
| Alternative | Discuss options with guide if unable to complete hike |
What to expect: The trail climbs steadily through pine forest, with prayer flags and mani walls along the way. Most travelers stop at the halfway cafeteria for tea or coffee and their first proper view of the monastery across the gorge. From there, the trail continues to a viewpoint, descends into a gorge, crosses a small waterfall, and climbs a final set of stone stairs to reach the monastery entrance itself.
How to prepare: Wear broken-in hiking shoes or sturdy walking shoes with good grip, dress in layers since temperatures change with altitude, and carry water, sun protection, and a light rain jacket depending on season. Modest clothing is required to enter the monastery (shoulders and knees covered), and cameras, phones, and bags are generally not permitted inside the monastery itself — these are typically stored at a checkpoint before entry.
Alternatives: Travelers who are unable to complete the full hike can arrange horses partway up the trail (as far as the cafeteria point) or can enjoy the view from lower viewpoints without doing the complete climb. Let your guide know in advance if you have mobility concerns so the day can be planned accordingly.
Bhutan tour pricing is not a single flat number — the final cost of a 5 Days Bhutan Tour Package depends on several factors, and understanding them helps you compare packages accurately rather than judging by price alone.
For the package pricing we discussed:
| Group Size | 3-Star | 4-Star | 5-Star / Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Person | USD 1,450 | USD 1,750 | USD 2,250 |
| 2 People | USD 1,150 pp | USD 1,400 pp | USD 1,850 pp |
| 3–6 People | USD 1,050 pp | USD 1,300 pp | USD 1,700 pp |
| 7–10 People | USD 980 pp | USD 1,200 pp | USD 1,550 pp |
We do not recommend booking a Bhutan tour based on a single unexplained "from" price. Ask your operator exactly what is and isn't included so you can compare packages on equal terms.
There is no single "best" season for a 5 Days Bhutan Tour — the right time depends on what you want from the trip.
| Season | Months | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | March–May | Pleasant weather, flowers and greenery |
| Summer/Monsoon | June–August | Lush landscapes, occasional rain |
| Autumn | September–November | Generally favorable sightseeing conditions |
| Winter | December–February | Cooler temperatures and quieter travel |
Bhutan also holds several tsechus (religious festivals) throughout the year featuring masked dances and traditional ceremonies; travelers interested in aligning their 5 Days Bhutan Tour with a festival should ask about specific dates when booking, since these vary year to year.
Bhutan requires nearly all international visitors to obtain a visa in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator, who submits the application on your behalf. Once approved, you'll receive a visa clearance letter to present on arrival at Paro.
Current Bhutan tourism regulations list a one-time visa application fee of US$40 per person, along with a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per adult per night, applicable for most international visitors. Children aged 6 to 11 generally receive a discounted SDF rate, and children under 6 are typically exempt. Indian nationals follow a separate permit process with a different, lower per-night fee. These figures reflect current published policy, but Bhutan's government fees and entry regulations can change, so travelers should confirm the latest requirements with their operator before departure.
Guides are mandatory for all tourists traveling in Bhutan, and for travelers accompanied by a certified guide, separate route permits are generally not required beyond the initial visa process. Royal Nepal Holidays handles visa processing, SDF payment, and permit arrangements as part of your 5 Days Bhutan Tour Package.
Bhutan Tour from Nepal travelers benefit from one of the most direct and convenient routes into the country. Kathmandu is among the international cities with direct flight connections to Paro, operated by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, with flights typically taking a little over an hour and offering close-up Himalayan views along the way, including Everest on clear days.
For travelers combining a Bhutan trip with a Nepal itinerary, this 5 Days Bhutan Tour from Kathmandu works well as a standalone add-on to any Nepal trekking or touring package. On arrival at Paro, your Bhutanese guide and driver will meet you at the airport, and your visa clearance letter (arranged in advance) will already be on file at immigration. From there, the itinerary proceeds exactly as outlined above, with your return flight also routing back through Kathmandu.
As a Kathmandu-based operator, Royal Nepal Holidays regularly arranges Bhutan tour packages from Nepal for both Nepal-based travelers and international visitors passing through Kathmandu, making it straightforward to combine a Bhutan trip with an Everest, Annapurna, or Kathmandu valley itinerary.
Indian nationals do not require a visa to enter Bhutan but must obtain an entry permit, which can be arranged online in advance or on arrival at Paro or at land border crossings, through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Indian travelers pay a separate, lower Sustainable Development Fee rate compared to other international visitors. This 5 Days Bhutan Tour Package can be arranged for travelers flying in from Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, or Guwahati, all of which have flight connections to Paro, or for those entering overland via Phuentsholing.
Bhutanese cuisine centers on rice, chili-based dishes such as ema datshi (chili and cheese stew), pork, buckwheat and red rice, and locally grown vegetables. Most Bhutan tour packages include a mix of Bhutanese and Continental/Indian-style meals at hotels and recommended restaurants, and your guide can arrange for spicier, milder, or dietary-specific meals (vegetarian, vegan, or allergy-conscious options) with advance notice.
This 5 Days Bhutan Tour is available with 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star/luxury hotel options in Thimphu, Punakha, and Paro. 3-star hotels offer clean, comfortable rooms with essential amenities; 4-star properties add more space, better service, and stronger amenities; 5-star and boutique luxury properties (including well-known international luxury brands with properties in Bhutan) offer premium rooms, spa facilities, and higher-end dining. Homestay options can also be arranged for travelers wanting a more immersive, local experience in the Punakha valley.
Yes — for a focused first visit to Bhutan, five days is enough time to comfortably cover Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, the three valleys that make up the classic western Bhutan circuit. This itinerary includes the country's most recognizable sites: Tiger's Nest Monastery, Punakha Dzong, Dochula Pass, and Thimphu's major cultural landmarks, all without excessive driving.
That said, there is an honest trade-off worth understanding before you book. Some shorter Bhutan itineraries choose to focus only on Paro and Thimphu to keep the pace relaxed, leaving Punakha out entirely. Others, including this 5 Days Bhutan Tour, include Punakha as part of the classic five-day circuit, which does mean a longer driving day on Day 2 in exchange for seeing Bhutan's most photographed dzong. Neither approach is "wrong" — it depends on whether you'd rather have a slower pace with fewer stops, or see more of western Bhutan in the same five days. If your priority is a more relaxed trip, ask about a Paro-and-Thimphu-only version; if you want the complete three-valley experience, the itinerary above is the better fit. Travelers wanting to add central or eastern Bhutan, or simply prefer a slower pace, should consider a 6 or 7 Days Bhutan Tour instead.
Couples
The pace, scenery, and cultural depth of this 5 Days Bhutan Tour make it a popular choice for couples, with private transportation and flexible timing throughout.
Families
This itinerary can be adjusted for families traveling with children, including lighter sightseeing days and flexible timing around the Tiger's Nest hike; children under 6 are also exempt from Bhutan's daily SDF.
Senior Travelers
The itinerary can be paced more gently for senior travelers, with additional rest stops, a slower Tiger's Nest hike pace, or the option to use horses for part of the climb.
Solo Travelers
As a private Bhutan tour, solo travelers get their own vehicle, driver, and guide rather than joining a fixed group, with full flexibility over timing and stops.
Friends & Small Groups
Traveling in a group of 3–10 people reduces the per-person cost while keeping the same private, flexible itinerary structure.
First-Time Bhutan Visitors
This is the most recommended itinerary structure for first-time visitors, since it covers the country's essential cultural and scenic highlights in a single, well-paced trip.

Bhutan Beyond The Postcard
As Someone Interested In Photography And Architecture, I Was Hoping Bhutan Would Offer More Than Beautiful Mountain Scenery, And It Certainly Did. The 5-day Journey Gave Me Plenty Of Opportunities To Observe The Details Of Bhutanese Architecture, Religious Sites And Everyday Life.
Paro Valley Was Particularly Atmospheric In The Morning, While The Drive Through Dochula Pass Offered Spectacular Changes In Landscape. Punakha Dzong Was Another Highlight—not Only Because Of Its Location But Also Because Of The Craftsmanship And Architectural Details.
Our Guide, Pema, Added Considerable Depth To The Journey. He Explained The Cultural Significance Of The Places We Visited While Giving Me Enough Time To Stop, Observe And Take Photographs Rather Than Rushing Through Each Location.

A Smooth And Meaningful Solo Journey
I Traveled To Bhutan Alone And Chose The 5-day Private Itinerary Because I Wanted Enough Flexibility To Enjoy The Country Without Being Part Of A Large Group. The Arrangement Worked Very Well For Me. Paro, Thimphu And Punakha Each Had A Completely Different Atmosphere, And The Mountain Drives Between Them Were An Experience In Themselves.
Jigme Was An Excellent Guide For A Solo Traveler. He Was Attentive And Helpful But Never Made Me Feel That I Had To Follow A Rigid Schedule. He Was Also Happy To Answer My Many Questions About Bhutanese Culture And Daily Life.
The Long Mountain Drives Were Sometimes Tiring, And The Tiger's Nest Hike Was Definitely A Challenge, But Both Were Worthwhile. Reaching The Monastery After The Climb Was Probably My Favorite Moment Of The Trip.
