2 Days Bandipur Tour from Kathmandu

Perched on a quiet ridge between Kathmandu and Pokhara, Bandipur is one of the few hill towns in Nepal where a Newari trading settlement has survived largely intact. Cobbled streets, carved wooden windows, and a skyline framed by the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges make it an easy detour with an outsized reward. Our 2 Days Bandipur Tour from Kathmandu is built for travelers who want a genuine cultural experience without committing to a multi-day trek.

Over one night, you'll walk through Bandipur Bazaar, visit the Bindabasini and Khadga Devi temples, and catch sunrise or sunset from Tundikhel, with Himalayan peaks on the horizon on a clear day. Travelers with more time can add the Siddha Cave or a walk to Ramkot Village. This Bandipur Tour Package is run as a private, customizable trip — pickup from your Kathmandu hotel, a scenic drive west, and a relaxed pace once you arrive. Royal Nepal Holidays has been arranging short cultural tours like this one for travelers who want to see a different side of Nepal in a limited window of time.

Why Take a 2 Days Bandipur Tour?

Bandipur packs heritage, mountain scenery, and village life into a short window near Kathmandu, which is why it works well for such a range of travelers.

Weekend travelers get a full cultural escape without needing to book extra leave. Couples find the quiet bazaar streets and evening viewpoints well suited to an unhurried pace. Families can walk the town at their own speed, with no strenuous terrain involved. First-time Nepal visitors get a manageable introduction to Newari heritage and Himalayan views before or after a longer itinerary. Photographers have the bazaar's architecture, the sunrise viewpoint, and rural scenery around Ramkot to work with in a single trip. Senior travelers appreciate that the walking is gentle and there's no trekking involved. And travelers who want genuine culture without lacing up trekking boots get exactly that — Bandipur's combination of heritage, mountain scenery, village life, and a short travel time from Kathmandu is difficult to match elsewhere on a two-day budget.

What Makes This 2-Day Itinerary Special?

Unlike a simple overnight stop, this itinerary allows you to experience Bandipur during its most enjoyable periods:

Day 1:
Kathmandu → scenic drive → Bandipur → Newari heritage → temples → Tundikhel → sunset

Day 2:
Sunrise → breakfast → optional cave/village experience → lunch → Kathmandu

This structure also follows the practical advice of spending the evening and early morning in Bandipur, when the town is quieter and the viewpoints are more enjoyable. Current Bandipur itineraries similarly emphasize arriving in the afternoon, exploring the bazaar and viewpoints, then experiencing sunrise before departure.

Important Note About the Itinerary

The Siddha Cave and Ramkot Village activities are optional, because trying to include both in a 2-day itinerary can make the trip rushed.

For travelers wanting a relaxed experience, we recommend:

Day 1: Bandipur heritage town + Tundikhel sunset
Day 2: Sunrise + relaxed exploration + Kathmandu

For travelers who prefer adventure:

Day 1: Heritage town + sunset
Day 2: Sunrise + Siddha Cave + Kathmandu

For travelers continuing toward Pokhara, the itinerary can also be modified so that Day 2 ends in Pokhara instead of Kathmandu.

Extend Your Bandipur Experience

If you have additional time, Royal Nepal Holidays can customize the trip into:

  • 3 Days Bandipur Tour
  • Kathmandu–Bandipur–Pokhara Tour
  • Kathmandu–Bandipur–Chitwan Tour
  • Bandipur–Pokhara Tour
  • Nepal Cultural Tour
  • Nepal Family Tour

Bandipur's location between Kathmandu and Pokhara makes it particularly convenient to incorporate into a longer Nepal itinerary. Nepal Tourism Board describes Bandipur as approximately 140 km from Kathmandu and on the route toward Pokhara.

Royal Nepal Holidays can customize the transportation, accommodation, sightseeing and optional activities according to your group size, travel style and onward destination.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 : Kathmandu to Bandipur – Scenic Drive, Heritage Walk & Sunset

clock icon 5-6 Hours Driveaccomodation icon Hotel/guesthouse in BandipurMeal iconLunch + Dinner

Distance: Approximately 140 km
Driving time: Approximately 5–6 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops
Accommodation: Hotel/guesthouse in Bandipur
Meals: Lunch and dinner, according to the selected package

Morning: Departure from Kathmandu

Your 2 Days Bandipur Tour begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu.

After meeting your driver or guide, you leave Kathmandu and travel westward toward Bandipur. The journey follows Nepal's main highway through the hills and river valleys, with opportunities to see changing landscapes, rural settlements, farmland and mountain scenery along the way.

For a private tour, the departure time can be adjusted according to your preference, although an early morning departure is recommended so that you have sufficient time to explore Bandipur after arrival.

Scenic Journey Toward Bandipur

The road journey provides an opportunity to observe everyday life outside Kathmandu Valley. As you travel toward the central hills of Nepal, the landscape gradually changes from the Kathmandu Valley to greener hills, terraced farmland and river valleys.

Bandipur is situated approximately 1,000 m above sea level on a ridge overlooking the Marshyangdi Valley.

You can make short stops along the route for refreshments, photographs and lunch.

Afternoon: Arrival in Bandipur

After reaching the Bandipur area, continue uphill toward the historic town.

Check into your hotel and take some time to refresh.

After lunch or a short rest, begin your exploration of Bandipur's historic center.

Explore Bandipur Bazaar

Your first major sightseeing stop is Bandipur Bazaar, the cultural heart of the town.

Walk through the traditional streets and observe the preserved Newari-style buildings, wooden windows, traditional façades and local shops.

Bandipur's Newari character is one of the main reasons travelers visit the town. Nepal Tourism Board describes Bandipur as a predominantly Newar hill settlement where traditional cultural features, temples, shrines and Newari architecture remain important parts of the destination.

Take time to explore the small lanes rather than rushing through the area.

This is also a good opportunity to:

  • Photograph traditional architecture
  • Visit local shops
  • Meet local residents
  • Enjoy tea or coffee
  • Try local snacks
  • Observe traditional Newari houses
  • Experience the slower pace of the hill town

Visit Bindabasini Temple

Continue your heritage walk toward Bindabasini Temple.

Spend some time observing the architecture and religious atmosphere before continuing through the historic part of town.

Travelers should dress respectfully and follow local customs when visiting temples and shrines.

Visit Khadga Devi Temple

Continue your sightseeing with a visit to Khadga Devi Temple, another important cultural attraction around Bandipur.

Your guide can explain the local significance of the temple and surrounding heritage sites.

Evening: Tundikhel Viewpoint

Later in the afternoon, walk toward Tundikhel, one of Bandipur's well-known viewpoints.

Tundikhel sits along the ridge and provides broad views toward the surrounding hills, valley and Himalayan ranges. Nepal Tourism Board identifies Tundikhel and the viewpoints around Bandipur as important places for panoramic mountain and valley scenery.

If the weather is clear, you may be able to see sections of the Himalayan range.

The exact visibility of mountains depends on weather, season and atmospheric conditions, so mountain views should never be considered guaranteed.

Sunset in Bandipur

Stay at the viewpoint around sunset and enjoy the changing colors over the hills and valley.

After sunset, return toward Bandipur Bazaar.

The evening is one of the nicest times to experience Bandipur because the streets become quieter after many day visitors have left.

Evening Heritage Walk

Take a relaxed walk through the old town.

You can stop at a local café or restaurant and experience the atmosphere of Bandipur after dark.

Dinner and Overnight

Enjoy dinner at your hotel or a local restaurant.

Travelers interested in local food can request a traditional Newari or Nepali-style dinner.

Overnight at a hotel or guesthouse in Bandipur.

Day 2 : Sunrise View, Local Exploration & Return to Kathmandu

clock icon Whole Dayaccomodation icon No AccomoadtionMeal iconBreakfast + Lunch

Accommodation: Not included after departure
Meals: Breakfast and lunch, according to the selected package
Driving time: Approximately 5–6 hours to Kathmandu, depending on road conditions and traffic

Early Morning: Sunrise Experience

Wake up early to experience Bandipur before the town becomes busy.

Depending on weather and your physical ability, choose a nearby viewpoint such as Thani Mai or another suitable ridge viewpoint.

Thani Mai is located on a hill above Bandipur and is recognized by Nepal Tourism Board as a viewpoint offering wide views of Bandipur, surrounding hills and the Annapurna range.

The early morning atmosphere can be particularly peaceful, with changing light over the hills and valley.

Sunrise Photography

This is the best time for photography if the sky is clear.

You can photograph:

  • Bandipur town
  • surrounding hills
  • morning clouds
  • rural landscapes
  • Himalayan peaks when visible
  • sunrise colors

Allow extra time for the walk and return journey.

Breakfast at the Hotel

Return to the hotel after the sunrise excursion.

Enjoy breakfast and take some time to rest.

Optional Morning Activities

After breakfast, choose one of the following options depending on your interests, available time and physical condition.

Option 1: Relaxed Bandipur Heritage Walk

This is the recommended option for travelers who prefer a comfortable 2-day itinerary.

Spend additional time around:

  • Bandipur Bazaar
  • Traditional Newari houses
  • Local shops
  • Temples and shrines
  • Tundikhel
  • Local cafés

This option allows you to experience Bandipur without rushing.

Option 2: Ramkot Village Excursion

Travelers interested in rural culture can choose a short excursion toward Ramkot Village.

The surrounding hills provide opportunities to experience traditional village life, agricultural landscapes and rural Nepal.

The Nepal Tourism Board also lists hiking to Ramkot/Magar village areas among Bandipur's suggested activities.

This option is more suitable for travelers who enjoy walking and want to experience more than the historic town center.

Option 3: Siddha Cave Excursion

For travelers interested in nature and adventure, Siddha Cave can be added as an optional activity.

Siddha Cave is one of Bandipur's major attractions and is described by Nepal Tourism Board as Nepal's largest cave and among the largest caves in Asia.

The cave excursion involves walking/hiking and is therefore more demanding than simply exploring Bandipur Bazaar.

Allow sufficient time and wear appropriate footwear.

Because cave access and local operating arrangements can change, confirm the current conditions before departure.

Lunch in Bandipur

After completing your selected morning activity, return to Bandipur for lunch.

Enjoy a meal at the hotel or a local restaurant before beginning the return journey.

Afternoon: Bandipur to Kathmandu

After lunch, meet your driver and begin the journey back to Kathmandu.

The return drive follows the road toward Dumre and then continues toward Kathmandu.

Use the journey to enjoy the final views of Nepal's central hills and rural settlements.

Traffic and road conditions can significantly affect travel time, so allow flexibility when planning onward flights or other activities in Kathmandu.

Evening: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive in Kathmandu in the late afternoon or evening, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Your driver will drop you at your hotel or another agreed location.

This marks the end of your 2 Days Bandipur Tour from Kathmandu with Royal Nepal Holidays.

Additional Information about Bandipur Tour

Things to Do in Bandipur

Explore Bandipur Bazaar

The main bazaar is a single pedestrian street lined with restored Newari trading houses, their upper floors fronted by carved wooden windows. The stone paving and lack of vehicle traffic give the street an unusually intact, unhurried feel compared to busier towns along the same highway.

Watch Sunrise or Sunset

Tundikhel and the Thani Mai viewpoint above the bazaar both offer open views over the valley below and, on clear days, a wide stretch of the Himalayan skyline. Sunrise and sunset are the two times the light and visibility tend to be at their best.

Visit Bindabasini Temple

Bindabasini Temple sits close to the main bazaar and remains an active place of worship for local residents. Visitors are welcome to observe respectfully during their walk through town.

Visit Khadga Devi Temple

Khadga Devi Temple is another active local temple within walking distance of the bazaar, worth a stop as part of the same heritage walk.

Explore Siddha Cave

Siddha Cave is an optional activity reached by a walk down from the bazaar. It's one of the larger cave systems in the area, with sections that require some care underfoot — closed shoes with good grip are recommended, and a local guide is useful for navigating the cave safely.

Walk to Ramkot Village

A walk out to Ramkot takes you past terraced fields and a traditional rural settlement, a contrast to the trading-town atmosphere of the main bazaar. It's a good option for travelers who want a quieter, more local view of the area.

Experience Newari Culture

Beyond the individual sites, Bandipur's Newari character shows up in its architecture, its food, and the everyday rhythm of the bazaar — worth simply spending time in rather than rushing between fixed stops.

Kathmandu to Bandipur Distance and Travel Time

Bandipur lies along the Prithvi Highway route between Kathmandu and Pokhara, roughly 140 kilometers from Kathmandu by road. The drive typically takes around 4 to 5 hours in a private vehicle, including the final climb up from the highway junction near Dumre to the hilltop town itself — though actual travel time depends on traffic on the Prithvi Highway, road and weather conditions, and any stops made along the way for photos or breaks.

Route & Travel Information

Route Approx. Distance Approx. Travel Time
Kathmandu → Bandipur 140–150 km 5–6 hours
Bandipur → Kathmandu 140–150 km 5–6 hours
Bandipur → Pokhara 75–80 km 2.5–3.5 hours
Bandipur → Chitwan Approx. 130–150 km 4–5 hours

Travel time depends on traffic, road conditions, weather and stops.

A private car or jeep is generally more convenient than a public tourist bus for this route, since it allows direct hotel pickup, flexible stop timing, and a more comfortable ride on the winding final stretch up to Bandipur.

How to Reach Bandipur

Transportation

Transportation Suitable For
Private Car 1–3 travelers
Private SUV/Jeep 4–6 travelers
Tourist Van 7–14 travelers
Tourist Bus Larger groups
Private Vehicle Recommended for flexibility

Private Car/Jeep

The most convenient option for most travelers. Benefits include flexible departure timing, direct pickup from your Kathmandu hotel, the ability to stop for photographs along the highway, and a more comfortable ride for families or couples.

Tourist Bus

A more economical option along the same Prithvi Highway route, generally suited to budget-conscious travelers who don't need door-to-door pickup or flexible stops.

From Pokhara

Because Bandipur sits directly on the Kathmandu-Pokhara highway, it works well as a stopover for travelers heading either direction between the two cities, rather than requiring a separate dedicated trip.

From Chitwan

Bandipur can also be combined with a Chitwan jungle safari as part of a longer multi-destination itinerary, since the routes intersect near the same highway corridor.

Best Time to Visit Bandipur

Season Months Experience
Spring Mar–May Pleasant weather, greenery and good sightseeing
Summer/Monsoon Jun–Aug Rainy; cloudy mountain views and possible road delays
Autumn Sep–Nov Clearer skies and excellent sightseeing conditions
Winter Dec–Feb Cool mornings/evenings and generally good visibility

Spring — March to May

Warm daytime temperatures and generally clear mornings make spring a popular season, with rhododendrons in bloom in the surrounding hills. Mountain visibility is usually good, though afternoon haze can build up later in the season.

Summer/Monsoon — June to August

The monsoon brings regular rainfall and lush green terraces, but also reduces mountain visibility significantly and can affect road conditions on the highway. Fewer crowds during this period.

Autumn — September to November

Widely considered the best season for mountain visibility, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. This is also the busiest season for tourism in the region.

Winter — December to February

Cold mornings and evenings but generally clear skies during the day, with good visibility. Fewer crowds than autumn or spring.

Weather can vary from year to year and even day to day, and Himalayan visibility is never guaranteed regardless of season.

Why Bandipur Is Different

Bandipur's Newari heritage has survived with less alteration than many other hill towns along Nepal's main highway corridors, and its historic core remains a working, lived-in bazaar rather than a preserved-for-tourism replica. The traditional architecture, the peaceful pace of the streets, the mountain viewpoints, and the surrounding rural villages all sit within an easy walk of each other. Its location — close to both Kathmandu and Pokhara — means you get a genuine cultural experience without needing a trek or a long detour off the main highway route.

Why Book With Royal Nepal Holidays?

Royal Nepal Holidays is a Nepal-based travel company that arranges trips like this one directly, with personalized itineraries built around what each traveler actually wants to see. Our travel consultants know the Bandipur route firsthand — the driving times, the seasonal conditions, and the practical details that make a short trip run smoothly. Tours are private and customizable rather than fixed group departures, transportation is flexible, and we stay in contact with you before and during the trip to handle any changes that come up.

Responsible & Sustainable Tourism

  • Respect local customs and the everyday rhythm of the bazaar — it's a living town, not a museum
  • Ask before photographing local residents, especially inside temples

  • Avoid single-use plastics where you can, and carry out what you carry in
  • Respect temple customs, including footwear removal and appropriate dress

Safety & Practical Travel Tips

  • Wear proper footwear if visiting Siddha Cave or doing any of the walking excursions
  • Carry cash for small local purchases, as card acceptance is limited in Bandipur
  • Respect temple customs and dress modestly when visiting
  • Follow your local guide's instructions, particularly inside the cave
  • Keep valuables secure, especially in shared or public transport
  • Check current weather conditions before setting out on optional hikes

A Peaceful Escape Into Nepal’s Heritage

Our Two Days In Bandipur Felt Like A Wonderful Change Of Pace After The Energy And Traffic Of Kathmandu. The Drive Into The Hills Was Scenic, And Arriving In Bandipur Felt Like Stepping Into A Completely Different Side Of Nepal. We Loved Wandering Through Bandipur Bazaar, Looking At The Traditional Newari Buildings And Stopping At Tundikhel For The Evening Views. Everything Was Arranged Smoothly By Sushil Who Was Helpful From The Beginning, While Our Tour Guide Rameshwor Simkhada Made The Heritage Walk Much More Meaningful With His Local Knowledge.

The Sunset Over The Surrounding Hills Was One Of Our Favorite Moments. Bandipur Wasn't Originally The Place We Were Most Excited About, But It Ended Up Being One Of The Most Memorable Stops On Our Nepal Journey.

Perfectly Planned For A Short Nepal Break

We Had Only A Limited Amount Of Time Available, So The 2 Days Bandipur Tour Was Exactly What We Needed. Royal Nepal Holidays Made The Logistics Very Straightforward, From The Kathmandu Hotel Pickup To The Private Transportation, Bandipur Accommodation And Return Journey.

Sushil Tiwari, Travel Consultant, Communicated Clearly With Us Before The Trip, And Deepak Pandey, Travel Consultant, Helped Coordinate The Arrangements Efficiently. The Itinerary Gave Us Enough Time To Explore Bandipur Bazaar, See The Traditional Newari Architecture And Enjoy The Views From Tundikhel Without Feeling Rushed. We Particularly Liked Bandipur In The Evening When The Streets Became Quiet And Relaxed.

For Anyone Looking For A Short Escape From Kathmandu Without Committing To A Trek, We Would Definitely Recommend Spending A Night In Bandipur.

Two Days That Felt Much Longer

We Booked The Bandipur Tour Because We Wanted Something Peaceful After Several Busy Days Traveling Around Nepal, And It Turned Out To Be Exactly What We Needed.Tiwari, Understood That We Wanted A Relaxed Itinerary And Helped Personalize The Arrangements. Manish Silwal, Also Made The Coordination Easy And Kept Everything Organized.

One Evening, We Sat With Cups Of Tea Overlooking The Hills As The Light Slowly Changed Over Bandipur. Later, Walking Through The Quiet Old Streets Was Such A Simple Experience, But It Became One Of Our Favorite Memories. The Traditional Houses, Peaceful Atmosphere And Beautiful Viewpoints Made The Town Feel Very Special. Two Days Sounds Short, But We Felt That We Experienced A Completely Different Side Of Nepal. It Was A Lovely Addition To Our Trip And A Perfect Break From The Busier Tourist Areas.

More Than Just A Scenic Hill Town

What Impressed Me Most About Bandipur Was Not Simply The Mountain Scenery, But The Character Of The Town Itself. The Traditional Newari Architecture, Temples, Narrow Streets And Everyday Local Life Made The Visit Feel Culturally Meaningful. Our Guide Rameshwor Simkhada Explained Details About The Heritage Sites During Our Walk, Which Helped Us Appreciate Things We Might Otherwise Have Passed Without Noticing.

Sushil Arranged The Tour Very Carefully And Made The Whole Experience Easy From Kathmandu Onward. I Especially Enjoyed Walking Through Bandipur Bazaar In The Morning Before It Became Busy. The Town Offered A Quieter And More Traditional Experience Than Some Of Nepal's Larger Destinations.

For Travelers Interested In Culture As Well As Scenery, I Think This Short Tour Provides A Very Worthwhile Glimpse Into Another Side Of Nepal.

The Best Kind Of Detour

I'll Admit That Getting Out Of Kathmandu Traffic Was Already Starting To Feel Like Part Of The Tour! But Once We Reached Bandipur, The Change Was Incredible. The Town Was Peaceful, The Old Streets Were Charming, And Suddenly Our Schedule Felt Much More Relaxed. Travel Consultant From Royal Nepal Helped Us Organize Everything, While Deepa Lamichhane Was Very Helpful With The Arrangements.

We Enjoyed Wandering Around Bandipur Bazaar, Checking Out The Traditional Buildings And Spending Time At Tundikhel. The Local Food Was Another Pleasant Surprise, And Waking Up To The Quiet Morning Views Was Probably My Favorite Part. I Originally Thought Two Days Might Not Be Enough, But It Was Actually A Great Length For A Short Visit. If You're Traveling Around Nepal And Want A Scenic Break Without Doing A Trek, Bandipur Is Definitely Worth The Detour.
